How the Holidays Can Always be Happy

It is not a happy thanksgiving for everyone. When everyone is saying Happy Thanksgiving, some are grieving because they have lost someone or something important. Some have unmet expectations in their life. Some are sick or have a sick loved one. Family members are left behind because of death, divorce, or relocation. Loneliness is common. How can it be a happy holiday, or how can someone be thankful when their life is not good? This is an age- old question that will always be relevant while we are on the Earth.

There is an answer to this question, found in the life of Jesus Christ.

Jesus said in Luke 4:18, 19

18“The Spirit of the Lord is on me,

because he has anointed me

to proclaim good news to the poor.

He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners

and recovery of sight for the blind,

to set the oppressed free,

19to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” f

Jesus restated His purpose in verses 42 and 43 of that same chapter:

42At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them. 43But he said, “I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.” And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.

Jesus has good news for you when you feel life’s poverty, imprisonment, darkness, or oppression. He is near. Jesus said, “I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God.” Jesus brings the kingdom of God to rule and reign of God in your heart and mind. When we are empty in this life, we have the life of Jesus- the life of God Himself- living in us. In Him there is hope. There is hope of provision, seeing loved ones again and true peace and joy. Jesus shatters life’s pain and hopelessness. Jesus loves you, and He is with you. He will restore and heal you- physically and spiritually. He gives you and I hope.

When life makes you full of despair, look to Jesus. The life of God Himself will transform your mind, body, and spirit. You will have hope. Life will have joy again, even despite the disappointments you are experiencing.

I am not blind to the fact that life is hard, tremendously hard. But there is hope in life because of the life of God himself in you. This requires that you place your faith in God. Faith often has no evidence. That is why it is called faith- believing in something you cannot see. But that does not mean there is no evidence of it. When you place your faith in Jesus, He will heal you. He will bring you a transformation. The good news of Jesus- of God Himself ruling and reigning in your heart= will bring the evidence you need. Faith in Jesus- the Good News incarnate- will bring the transformation you need to make your holidays happy.

In all of life’s sufferings, Jesus is with you. In Him is joy, freedom, and light even when you are shattered by life’s events.
